The First Porsche GT3 (996): A Motorsport Icon
Launched in 1999 as the successor to the RS models, the Porsche 996 GT3 introduced the GT3 name with pure motorsport DNA. Its aerodynamic package included adjustable rear wings, side skirts, and a modified front apron. Powered by a 3.6L six-cylinder boxer engine (M96/76), it was derived from the crankcase of the air-cooled Porsche 964 and inspired by racing legends like the Porsche 962 and 911 GT1.
Built to motorsport standards, the engine featured dry sump lubrication, a titanium connecting rod system, and an advanced cylinder bank design for increased torsional rigidity. The VarioCam-controlled intake camshafts, dual-mass flywheel, and eight-bearing crankshaft helped achieve a 7,800 rpm redline, producing 360 hp (265 kW) and a liter output of 100 hp.
Weighing just 1,350 kg, the 996 GT3 accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 302 km/h, making it the first road-legal Porsche to break the 300 km/h barrier. Power was delivered to the rear wheels via the 6-speed manual G96/90 gearbox with a limited-slip differential, cementing the GT3's legacy as a precision-engineered sports car for the road and track.
